On the day of your test you must have with you
your photo card licence.
If you have an old style licence then you must bring a valid passport. No other form of photo ID will be accepted.
Your driving test will last approximately 40 minutes. Once you have met your examiner your test will start with an eyesight check and 1 vehicle safety questions, also known as Show Me Tell Me. A second show me question will be asked whilst your out on test. You will then start your practical driving test which will include 1 manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop.
During your test you can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test, 16 or more minors or 1 or more serious or dangerous fault and you will fail.
The examiner is looking to see if you can drive safely and that you can demonstrate a good understanding of the Highway Code through your driving. You will be given verbal directions to follow. There is also an independent part of the test where you will be asked to follow a satellite navigation system (tomtom) or, to follow road signs. You will also be asked to carry out any 1 of the following
Pull up on the right and reverse back 2 car lengths
Drive forward into a bay and reverse out
Reverse parking in the Test Centre car park
Reverse parking on the road (parallel parking)
It is important to try and stay calm during your test & drive in the manor your instructor has taught you. You are allowed to have someone sit in the back of your car during the test. They must be over 16 years of age and must not take any part in the test.
At the end of the test, the examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed.
If you pass, the examiner will normally take your photo licence off you, issue you with a pass certificate & your new licence will be sent to you, via the post from the DVLA in about 3 to 4 weeks.
If you fail, the examiner will ask if you want a debrief as to why you have failed. Always say yes & take as much advice as you can from the examiner.
In both scenarios you will be issued with a driving report form, which has all your faults marked on it.
You can retake a test 10 working days after failing, subject to availability.
If on the day of your test there are adverse weather conditions then the DVSA will rearrange your test at no extra cost. There is a contact number to ring on your appointment letter if you are unsure on the day.
If you pass, then the DVSA recommend you take the PASS PLUS course which the SLK Driving School is registered to do. click here
